Chapter 25

The Guardian

“Shalom Grace,” the stranger spoke in a soft, compassionate voice as he gently took her hand and helped her limp, perspiration-soaked body up from the ground.

“Please take this tissue and wipe your eyes. I’ve been waiting for you and Jonathan. In fact, I’ve been waiting a very long time for this moment.”

Her eyes popped open. She was not dead or being abducted, and the stranger was not going to stab her with the package of tissue he was offering her. Feeling a strange calming sensation, she was comfortably drawn toward the man in black as if he were an old friend. Wiping tears from her eyes, she asked politely, “Who are you? How do you know our names, and why have you been following us?”

“One question at a time, Grace. Let’s just say, I have been keeping an eye on you and Jonathan until the time was right.”

At that moment, Jonathan spotted Grace talking to the stranger and rushed to see what was going on.

Noticing Grace’s red eyes and clothes soaked with perspiration, Jonathan shouted, “Grace, is this man bothering you? Do you want me to call the police?”

“No, Jonathan, everything is all right; he’s a friend.”

The stranger’s eyes met Jonathan’s eyes with a captivating gaze that took his breath away.

“Shalom, Jonathan, my name is Malachi, and I have an appointment with you and Grace.”

“You’re Malachi? You’re the mysterious Malachi?” Jonathan questioned with a lump in his throat. “How do you know my name? I’m sure we’ve never met, and we don’t have an appointment with you.”

“Yes, I’m Malachi. I’ve known you both for a long time although we’ve never been formally introduced. Jonathan, you may remember the note from me attached to the letter from UNESCO regarding your expedition to Iraq.”

“Yes, I remember the note.”

“Do you remember the change in your flight plans to Iraq that saved your lives as well as the lives of your team? The American Ambassador to Iraq was also supposed to be on the doomed flight you were scheduled to be flying. In fact, he was the target of the terrorist rocket that brought the plane down. Remember, he boarded your flight at the last second to avoid alerting the terrorist network of his change in plans.

“How did he know about the planned rocket attack on his flight?”

“Let’s just say he had a very strong feeling about it. You see, he is also one of my clients.”

“Wait a minute, are you calling us your clients?”

“Did you wonder how Grace discovered the clue in the Smithsonian Museum that led you both to the tomb of King Cyrus? Did you think it unusual that no one could determine who activated the QRF that rescued you from the nuclear laboratory in Iran? Do you remember the note on your car in the parking lot at the airport that warned you before the explosion?”

Jonathan and Grace were speechless. Finally, Jonathan choked out the words. “You were responsible for all those things, but how…?”

Without hesitation, Grace snapped out of her trance and, with tears streaming down her face, hugged the man.
